Rob Schaaf is a state senator in Missouri. He’s also the
Republican author of a 2012 ballot measure preventing the state from setting up
its own insurance exchange. But why would Shaaf go out of his way to block health
care access to Missouri’s 850,000 uninsured citizens?
“We can’t afford everything we do now, let alone provide free medical care to able-bodied adults. I have a philosophical problem with doing that, and I’m also worried about our country’s financial situation.”
Two things, Mr. Schaaf:
1. The Affordable Care Act does not provide free medical
care to anybody. It provides a framework in which uninsured voters can find
affordably priced health care that they pay for.
2. Saying you have a “philosophical problem” with poor people getting health care doesn’t make you a philosopher. It makes you a dick.
