What election spending looked like in 2014 (Hint: Not good)

The Brennan Center for Justice has released its analysis of political money in the 2014 U.S. elections. What has the Supreme Court's Citizen United decision wrought? Check it:

1. Dark money played a critical role in funding a new Senate.
  • Dark money in Senate elections has more than doubled since 2010, from $105 million in inflation-adjusted dollars, to $226 million in 2014.
  • Almost half of the $1 billion in 2014 dollars that outside spenders plowed into Senate elections over the last three cycles, $485 million, was dark money.
  • In the 11 most competitive races in 2014, dark money comprised 59 percent of nonparty outside spending. In the 10 competitive races that we have candidate spending data for, dark money comprised 28 percent of total spending (candidate, party, and outside group).
  • The winners in the 11 most competitive races in 2014 together had more than $131 million in dark money supporting them — 71 percent of the nonparty outside spending in their favor.

2. Super PACs are funded by an exclusive few.
Of the 10 highest-spending super PACs in the most competitive Senate races in 2014, all but two got less than one percent of their individual contributions from small donors of $200 or less. Average contributions from donors of more than $200 were in the five- and six-figure range.

Across all federal elections since Citizens United was decided in 2010, there has been more than $1 billion in super PAC spending. Just 195 individuals and their spouses gave almost 60 percent of that money — more than $600 million.

3. The wealthy have used single-candidate groups to support candidates far in excess of federal contribution limits.
In the 11 competitive Senate races in 2014, 16 candidate-specific groups each spent more than $1 million in Senate elections, twice as many as in the last election. Five of these groups spent more than $3 million; three of them beat the previous cycle’s record high of $5.9 million.

Randy Weber is poorly educated. (And a jack-ass!)

Boy, Rep. Randy Weber (R-Texas) is a true diplomat. "I know," he thought. "I'll compare the two-term President of the U.S. to the most reviled figure in history."

But the best part was Weber's subsequent apology:
"It was not my intention to trivialize the Holocaust nor to compare the President to Adolf Hitler."
What?! That's exactly what you DID!
"I now realize that the use of Hitler invokes pain and emotional trauma for those affected by the atrocities of the Holocaust and victims of anti-Semitism and hate."
This gentleman is a true know-nothing if he just NOW realizes the Holocaust is a painful memory for people. But of course, he was already in possession of that knowledge—but like a good GOP politician, he just didn't care.
"Even Adolph [sic] Hitler thought it more important than Obama to get to Paris. (For all the wrong reasons.) Obama couldn't do it for right reasons."

John Boehner: Orange Liar, Black Lungs

“There are less people today with health insurance than there were before this law went into effect.”
—House Speaker John Boehner, March 13, 2014

Actually, the percentage of people without health insurance has declined 30% from 2013 to 2014. Oh, and in the year since Obamacare launched, unemployment is well under 6% and the U.S. economy has added nearly 3 million jobs—the best such performance since 1999.

What a jerk.

“They’re ostrich. Probably some endangered species; I have a reputation to maintain.”

—Sen. James Inhofe (R-OK), on what his boots are made of.

It's official: Half of Republicans are certifiable morons

I just read through this Farleigh Dickinson University poll which reveals that 51% of Republicans think the Iraq either probably or definitely had Weapons of Mass Destruction.

*facepalm*

Bonus Idiocy: 34% of Republicans think that President Obama is either probably or definitely not a citizen of the United States.

*double facepalm*

If Allah is great, why does he need Muslim fundamentalists to "defend" him?

I'm shocked—but not surprised—to hear of the attack on the Charlie Hebdo satirical magazine by Muslim extremists. Gunning down unarmed cartoonists is so woefully pitiful...

Is that a pocket pistol in your bathrobe, or...? Oh, it is. Never mind.

To preserve one’s sanity, it’s best to side-step the right-wing media. However, today I made an exception for The Daily Caller (run by the less-than-charming Tucker Carlson and the always-vile Betsy Rothstein). It ran a piece yesterday titled"Concealed Carry Tactics to Neutralize a Home Invasion."

How does one avoid such a nightmare? By having a gun on one’s person AT ALL TIMES:
This very realistic photo ran with the article.
Small, lightweight and extremely convenient, pocket pistols can be carried in many different ways and adapted to practically any style of dress, from your normal street clothes to a bathrobe. For maximum comfort and speed of access, they can be openly carried in a belt holster. If family “sensitivities” don’t allow that, the holstered pistol can be covered with a sweater.
Also, consider these factors when looking at your home:
“Wargame” your [house]. Take a hard look at the angles of fire available to you and identify areas where your rounds might endanger family members or neighbors. Look for solid backstops that will contain rounds that might miss or over-penetrate. At the same time, look for shooting positions that offer you the advantage of cover or concealment, or look for obstacles that would restrict an invader’s access to you. When you identify these prime defensive locations, consider stashing an extra magazine or speedloader there so, if practical, you can have extra reloads available if you need them.

And THAT, boys and girls, is why I have an arsenal in my pantry. (Right next to the Triscuits.)

Prepare to retch in 3, 2, 1...

Why the GOP majority in the Senate isn't real

Take the 46 Democratic members of Congress. Add up the total of votes they received in winning their seats. Now do the same with the Republicans.
FINAL TALLY
Democrats: 67.8 million votes
Republicans: 47.1 million votes

Tally from the Fair Vote Blog.
