What makes Oregon unique?

Oregon has reliably rejected a Republican governor and senators for some time now, including during the last round of elections. Is it because the state is reliably liberal?

Not really. Oregon's almost equally split between urban liberals and rural conservatives. But it seems that people here can see the GOP for what it is—vile.

Take Art Robinson, the Oregon Republican Party chairman. He who tried for a seat in Congress last month and failed. Why? The Portland Tribune explains:
  • Robinson circulated a petition that claimed reducing greenhouse gases in the atmosphere would harm the environment.
  • He suggested we could get rid of nuclear waste by sprinkling it over the ocean.
  • Robinson stated that the residents of one of Oregon's most impoverished counties be tested with urine samples.
  • And he called public schools the most devastating form of child abuse in the U.S.

In short, the leader of the state's GOP party is bonkers. And folks here just sort of picked up on it.

Looking forward to the new year!

Reflecting back over the last few years, it’s interesting to note that while the GOP predicted absolute disaster from Obama initiatives like auto bailouts and Obamacare, nothing of the sort has happened.

In fact, the U.S. auto business is killing it. Millions of people (like my family) now have improved access to health insurance. Crime, oil imports, and teen pregnancy are down.

Unemployment is at 5.8 percent, lower than what Mitt Romney promised to achieve.

In short, President Obama is killing it!

Multiple Choice Quiz: Lindsey Graham for President!

“I never shied away from trying to solve problems, and working with the Democrats is not a sin if it advances the overall cause…”
—Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-South Carolina), on why he's considering a run for president.

By "overall cause", Graham actually means:
  • himself
  • the GOP and its unending quest for more power
  • the good of the American people

Well then, it was all worth it!

Yes, the planet got destroyed. But for a beautiful moment in time we created a lot of value for shareholders.

A Short Play

Conservatives: Obamacare is hurting millions of Americans!
Liberals: Like who?
Conservatives: Uh, like that guy over there!
Liberals: He’s actually saving money.
Conservatives: What about her in the back?
Liberals: She’s got expanded coverage.
Conservatives: What about that fellow on the right?
Liberals: He’s keeping his doctor.
Conservatives: Well, my brother’s friend’s bowling partner’s niece heard a story from a dude on Snapchat about a person having to pay negligibly higher premiums!
Liberals: That does sound possible.
Conservatives: Checkmate.

Thanks, Mother Jones!

Marsha Blackburn is the Small Mind of the Day

"We need you to change things, not deny what's happening," Bill Nye told Representative Marsha Blackburn (Republican, Tennessee). He implored her to stop questioning the facts behind climate change, while Blackburn maintained that there is not consensus in the scientific community about global warming.

This despite the fact that 97% of climate scientists agree that climate-warming trends over the past century are very likely due to human activities, according to NASA. Experts say that there is still some uncertainty in absolutely linking isolated extreme weather events like Hurricane Sandy or bad droughts to global warming, but the vast majority of scientists ascribe climate change and the increase in extreme weather to human activity.

That makes Blackburn either willfully stupid or corrupt. But maybe when the planet heats up a bit, it'll melt the butter in her mouth.
